Dr. David Swann graduated from the University of Alberta with his B.MSc. in 1971; with his M.D. in 1973; and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1988. He practiced as a family physician from 1975 to 1984 and then as a public health consultant from 1988 to 2004. Dr. Swann was honoured with the Gold Star Teaching Award by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary in both 1999 and 2003.
Dr. Swann was first elected a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the constituency of Calgary Mountain View on November 22, 2004 and is now serving his fourth consecutive term as MLA. He was leader of Alberta Liberals while they were the Official Opposition from 2008 to 2010 and is currently the interim leader of the Alberta Liberal Party until a leadership convention is held in the spring of 2017.
Long an advocate on health issues, Dr. Swann was invited by Premier Rachel Notley to co-chair a review of Alberta’s mental health and addictions system – a very rare request for an opposition MLA. The ensuing report, Valuing Mental Health: Report of the Alberta Mental Health Review Committee, was made public in February 2016.
Dr. Swann and his wife, Laureen, have three children and 11 grandchildren. During his free time he enjoys peace and justice work, music and singing, jogging, woodworking, and writing.
